Dolphins were coming 3 in the competition after 18 rounds. They had inflicted 2 of our biggest losses. The game felt a bit David and Goliath before we started. David may not have won the contest but he/we certainly scared a team that must have aspirations of a premiership. They may be holding out false hope given that the cellar dwellers gave them a serious scare.

Jonathan turned in his best pitching performance – only one walk and 2 Ks. He was well supported by solid plays all over the diamond. 6 of 17 outs came from flies. All high balls except one that found glove were taken. The one exception would have been an above average take if it had come off.

Collectively we turned in our best hitting performance. We out hit Dolphins – 12 to 6. We didn’t receive a walk of a runs from a Passed Ball. All our runs came from hits. That is a first.

In hindsight (20/20), we missed an experienced clock watcher in the dugout. With a 2 runs lead and less than 15 minutes to play, a strategic pitching change may have altered the outcome. The last out in the 5th innings was at 11:48, just outside the 10 minute rule. A change before the last batter would have ensure that was the last innings. Of course, we still had to secure the last out, but I think we could have achieved it.

Next week is our last round. A win should jump us to 5th spot, and thus avoid the wooden spoon. We’ve had a couple of close losses against this Bosco team. Now is the time to come out and deliver an end of season tour de force.

Next game: Bosco (B) v St Pats at Tom Evans 1 on 12:30 Sun (18/02)
